The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees became the first teams to reach 80 wins on the season. The Dodgers had previously been the first team to reach 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 wins, and this is the first time all year another team has been on par with the boys and blue. However this is not the first time that these two teams have reached the 80 win mark at the same time. These two teams have reached the 80 win mark together twice before, once in 1947 and once in 1953. In both those seasons, the two teams met later that year in the World Series, with the Yankees winning the series in 7 games in 1947 and the Yankees winning the series again in 1953 but that time in just 6 games. This year, many people are believing history will repeat itself a 3rd time and that the Yankees and Dodgers would meet in the World Series once again.

The Yankees have had one of the most surprising yet outstanding seasons of any team in baseball. The Yankees are currently in 1st place in the AL East with a record of 81-41 and lead 2nd place Tampa Bay by 9.5 games. They have played their best baseball without their best players. Giancarlo Stanton and Luis Severino have missed nearly the entire year due to injury, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Edwin Encarnacion have all spent significant time on the disabled list, and yet they still continue to dominate. Players like Gio Urshela, Gleyber Torres, and Mike Tauchman have all stepped up in huge ways while Domingo German leads the American League in wins and DJ LeMahieu has been putting up MVP like numbers for the bronx bombers.

As for the Dodgers, they are the best team in the National League with a record of 80-41 and are 18.5 games ahead of the Diamondbacks for the NL West lead. Cody Bellinger is the front runner for the NL MVP, Hyun Jin Ryu is the front runner for the NL Cy Young, and the team is playing some of their best baseball that they ever have. Players like Alex Verdugo, Walker Buehler, and Will Smith are all having break out years, and as a team the Dodgers are 1st in run differential (+206), and are 1st in team ERA (3.27). The Dodgers have also been the national league representative in the World Series in 2017 and 2018 however failed to bring home the title in each of those years.

The Yankees and Dodgers are no strangers to each other in October. The two teams have met 11 times during the fall classic with the Yankees holding the clear advantage 8-3, however the Dodgers have the most recent World Series win coming back in 1981. The two teams will be playing their first regular season game in 3 years coming up this month from August 23rd – 25th here in LA and many people are predicting this could be a World Series preview. One thing is certain though, and that is both teams will be in October, but will they get a chance to renew their storied rivalry? Only time will tell.
